No NCAA scandal has so clearly reflected just how filthy the sport of college basketball is and how impossible it can be to hold anyone accountable when a school digs on behalf of a winning coach.
NEW ORLEANS — Just 921 days ago, the NCAA handed a document to the University of Kansas that called its men’s basketball head coach a cheat.
Since then, Kansas has won 81 basketball games, signed four McDonald’s All-Americans, won two Big 12 titles and now made a Final Four. As for the coach? Well, Teflon Bill Self was so embarrassed by it all that Kansas then gave him a lifetime contract which might as well be a major pointed to Indianapolis – an NCAA embarrassment that could only be overcome by Self holding the national title trophy Monday night.
