Kamaru Usman punched Colby Covington so hard he broke the UFC rival’s jaw, but Chaos denies it happened before the clash with Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272

Colby Covington will be hoping to inflict his own punishment when he takes on Jorge Masvidal this weekend after suffering twice at the hands of Kamaru Usman.

Chaos felt the force of Nigeria’s nightmare again in November as he left UFC 268 on crutches after unsuccessfully challenging for the welterweight title.

The pair first fought at UFC 245 in 2019 where Usman broke Covington’s jaw en route to a fifth-round TKO win – or did he?

“It definitely wasn’t broken,” Covington told ESPN ahead of their second meeting in November.

“He landed a clean shot, it was a good shot, but it wasn’t a broken jaw…I’m tougher than anyone, I can take anything.”

Usman gave that bit of room though.

“What you meant to say is… ‘I felt low,'” he wrote in an Instagram comment. “I wanted a way out, I knew I was going to be screwed up even more, so I wanted my coaches to stop the fight and save my life.”

The duo fought at UFC 245 – seven months after Usman won the welterweight title at the expense of Tyron Woodley and in the build, Covington himself had been loud and brash and, jaw be broken or not, finally his ego wrote a check that his body couldn’t cash.

Although not famous as a striker, Usman punched his opponent’s jaw in the third round before his victory by TKO in the fifth and final round. It was a fight that the judges had scored very evenly until this final round.

Usman tends to leave his opponents hurt.

When he defended his belt against Gilbert Burns in February, the defeated was so moved by his missed title shot that he started crying in the octagon.

Usman’s former sparring partner, the champ waited patiently before embracing his battered colleague.

After losing a second time, Covington didn’t seem to offer any apologies – photoshop or otherwise – and actually showed the champion rare respect at the end of his contest.

Usman and UFC boss Dana White paid tribute to Covington’s toughness and he earned the champion’s respect after nearly 10 rounds together in the octagon.

Chaos has since returned to his outspoken and brash opinions in the build-up to UFC 272 this weekend by claiming that Masvidal is nursing far worse than a broken jaw when they face each other.

He told ESPN: “I don’t want to knock her out. I’m going to hurt her so much that you won’t be the same after I’m done with you. I guarantee you’ll go into a coma, b* ***.
