Juventus 1-1 Arsenal: Vivianne Miedema strikes as Gunners score Women’s Champions League point

A

rsenal came from behind to draw 1-1 with Juventus in the Women’s Champions League and maintain their unbeaten start in Europe.

The Gunners, missing several players including injured England forward Beth Mead who ruptured her ACL, fell behind early in the second half when Lineth Beerensteyn put Juventus ahead after a quick counterattack.

Vivianne Miedema headed in from a corner to equalize just after the hour mark, but Jonas Eidevall’s side couldn’t create a late winner.

Arsenal, who were looking to extend their start to 100 per cent, remain top of Group C, two points clear of Juventus and three ahead of Lyon, who won 3-0 in Zurich.

The Gunners got off to a positive start, with Stina Blackstenius played by Frida Maanum, but saw her rising shot grazed the top of the crossbar.

Juventus goalkeeper Pauline Peyraud-Magnin, who spent a few seasons with the Gunners, then made a fine save after Swedish striker Blackstenius was sent off again shortly before the break. At the other end, Arianna Caruso put the ball wide in first half stoppage time.

Arsenal pressed again early in the second half as Australian Caitlin Foord tested Peyraud-Magnin before Lotte Wubben-Moy’s header was cleared from the line.

But it was Juve who broke the deadlock in the 51st minute. Dutch striker Beerensteyn burst into a counterattack to overtake Arsenal keeper Manuela Zinsberger.

Arsenal responded and got the equalizer just after the hour mark when Miedema came in from a corner, and as the striker was about to complete the return both teams had to settle for a point.
