Jurgen Klopp at a loss as Liverpool struggles lead to Napoli capitulation

Any defensive weaknesses that plagued his side’s start to the Premier League season were further exposed at the Diego Maradona Stadium, with Liverpool beaten by an excellent Napoli.

Within twenty minutes, Klopp saw his side concede two penalties, one of which was scored by former transfer target Piotr Zielinksi.

Victor Osimhen would miss the second but Giovanni Simeone and Zielinksi put the Serie A side within four goals before Luis Diaz’s excellent consolation strike.

The result means Liverpool have won just two of their first seven games in all competitions, falling behind in six of them.

After a worrying start to the season, Klopp admitted the problems were obvious, although it was difficult to pinpoint the reasons behind them.

“Really hard to take, it’s not that hard to explain when you watched the game,” he told BT Sport.

“Starting with the two penalties, OK first of all Napoli had a very good match, we didn’t, that’s the first explanation for the defeat.

“They scored a penalty and missed another but the next two goals we served on a plate and we should defend better. 3-0 having chances but never really in the game. We weren’t compact defensively or offensively.Until Thiago entered the pitch I don’t remember a counter pressure situation, we were too wide.

“It’s all obvious, but why it happened I can’t answer now, let me think about it. It’s a really tough cookie to take, but I have to take it.”
