Buttler is the fourth English drummer to score an IPL century after Kevin Pietersen, Ben Stokes (twice) and Jonny Bairstow

Buttler, whose best score in six previous innings in this year’s tournament was 49, said after helping the Royals at 220-3: “I really enjoyed it. It was great spending time there. and having fun. Haven’t found it. It’s been a while since I’ve been feeling my best now, so it’s been a bit difficult.

“Sometimes you have to accept that you weren’t playing well and just find a way to hang on. Sometimes I think I was guilty of trying to get back in shape too quickly and not giving myself a chance. I managed to do this and got better as the innings went on.

“I’ve spent a lot of my career in the middle order where hundreds aren’t necessarily that easy to find. At the top of the order you have a great chance, so I’m finally going to stop making say. Sir Alastair Cook, he’s got a T20 cent over me! “

Buttler is the fourth England player to score an IPL century after Kevin Pietersen, Rajasthan Royals teammate Ben Stokes (twice) and Sunrisers’ Jonny Bairstow.

Pietersen scored 103 steps for Delhi Capitals against Deccan Chargers in 2012, while Stokes – absent this season due to a broken finger – hit an unbeaten 103 for Rising Pune Supergiant against the Gujarat Lions in 2017, then 107 steps for the Rajasthan Royals against the Indians of Mumbai in 2020.

Bairstow, meanwhile, amassed 114 for the Sunrisers against the Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2019.

Buttler would have been trapped in seven by Rashid Khan on Sunday if Sunrisers could have asked for a review – but they had shredded him earlier in seeking to get Yashasvi Jaiswal out of lbw.

Buttler made the Sunrisers pay off as his 150-on-88 second-wicket stand with Royals skipper Sanju Samson (48 off) propelled their team to a massive total at Feroz Shah Kotla, the same venue where 437 points had been. scored when Mumbai edged out Chennai Super Kings in a thriller Saturday night.

The Sunrisers are now led by Kane Williamson as David Warner was sacked as captain and then completely excluded from Sunday’s game with Rajasthan.
