Leon Edwards scored the biggest victory of his career at UFC 263 with a shutout decision victory over Nate Diaz.
“Rocky” took a unanimous 49-46 overall, but had to survive an assault in the dying minute of the final lap and it made more headlines than the win itself.
Considering the Briton is now undefeated in 10 fights, it should be obvious he’s next in contention for the welterweight title, but UFC president Dana White insists Colby Covington is the man ready to take on Kamaru Usman.
Jorge Masvidal was the last man to challenge Usman and he would suffer the first knockout loss of his career as a result.
Gamebred is looking to return to the Octagon in October or November and he has told reporters he would be ready to fight both the Diaz brothers or the Edwards.
“All of the above,” Masvidal told reporters, including TheMacLife.
“The one that’s available in October, November when I come back is the one whose head comes off.”
Edwards and Masvidal have a story.
Returning to UFC London in 2019, when Masvidal knocked out Darren Till, he punched Edwards backstage after the event.
While Masvidal respected Edwards’ skills in winning over Diaz, he doesn’t think the Birmingham native is a killer like him.
“It was a good performance from (Edwards and Diaz),” Masvidal said.
“Leon did what he does. He keeps asking for more money and more stuff, but he’s not a finisher, he’s not a fighter.
“He was winning happily and he wasn’t willing to take any risks to go out there and get those finishes, which is why I don’t think he’s in the position he wants to be. He doesn’t go there and fights every second of every minute.
“He’s a very talented guy, but he just doesn’t have that courage in him, that nastiness to go out there and beat a top competitor like he should.”
Edwards saw the comments on social media and couldn’t help but shoot the BMF champion.
“This boy woke up [laughing emoji] the last time he said he fell asleep, ”Edwards wrote.
Animosity in real life always attracts money and you have to imagine that this is a fight that Dana White would love to lead.
Edwards told talkSPORT he feels he deserves a title shot now and would be willing to wait to get it, but fighting Masvidal could also be a good paycheck.
