John Legend Blames His Breakup With Kanye West For Supporting Trump And Running For President

Left-leaning pop star John Legend has spoken publicly about his falling out with Kanye West, blaming West’s support of President Donald Trump and his subsequent run for president for their failed friendship.

John Legend opened up about his relationship with Kanye West in an interview on the Ax Files podcast, hosted by CNN personality and former Obama administration official David Axelrod.

“Well, you know, we’re not as much friends as we used to be because, I honestly think, because we publicly disagreed on his candidacy, his support for Trump,” Legend said. “I think it’s become too much for us to maintain our friendship, honestly.”

The caption said he doesn’t endorse West’s candidacy for election.

“He was upset that I did not support his candidacy for President of the United States of America, for understandable reasons,” the singer said. “I wasn’t the only one, but, you know, he wasn’t happy about it. And we really haven’t been close since then.

John Legend initially supported Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s (D-MA) bid for the White House, then shifted his allegiance to Joe Biden after Warren dropped out of the race. Legend campaigned for Biden by co-hosting fundraisers.

The singer even performed at Biden’s inaugural festivities.
