Derek Carr says he has ‘a lot of emotions’ after former Las Vegas Raiders head coach Jon Gruden resigns over new allegations of offensive emails

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr has spoken out on the resignation of head coach Jon Gruden, following the emergence of offensive emails he sent, saying “I love the man, I hate sin “.

The New York Times had reported Monday the existence of emails sent by Gruden containing homophobic or misogynistic terms. This followed a Friday report from The Wall Street Journal that said, Gruden used racist language in a 2011 email to describe the appearance of DeMaurice Smith, the executive director of the NFL Players Association.

Gruden resigned later Monday evening, and Carr said he had experienced anger, empathy and stomach pains over the past week.

“Lots of emotions obviously,” Carr said. “I didn’t see it all coming. We all took it by surprise. There will be a day for those feelings, but from an emotional standpoint, I have a job to do.

“Are conversations still happening?” Absoutely. Another part of the leadership role is making sure the guys are okay.

“It’s the biggest story in sport right now. You turn on the TV and that’s what’s happening. I’m sad for our organization, I’m sad for our fans.”

Carr also added to Gruden: “I love man, but I hate sin.

“No one is perfect, if we started opening everyone’s private emails and texts people would start to sweat … Hopefully not too much, but maybe that’s what they should do for all the coaches, GMs and owners from now on and see what happens. “

Raiders tight end Darren Waller also commented on the story, saying he hopes Gruden has the “grace” to allow him to learn from what he has done.

“I didn’t agree to this happening. I was a little embarrassed by it,” Waller said, before adding, “I’m someone who comes from the space I want to offer to. grace and allow them to learn from what they may have done.

“I know a lot of people might want to cancel it. And I understand that. What he said was inexcusable.

“But at the same time, where can we offer him the grace to learn and grow and then be able to be in the circles he was with to be among the people he was emailing and saying, ‘This Is not fair. “”

Raiders general manager Mike Mayock spoke to the media on Wednesday, explaining how he and the organization sought to support the players – which includes defensive end Carl Nassib, the NFL’s first openly gay player – during this period.

“I spoke to several black players. We contacted a group of players, black and white,” Mayock said. “Everyone has emotions and feelings. I’ve talked to some people in my department who are black. My director of occupational screening [Dwayne Joseph], and I just said, ‘DJ, I can’t put myself in your shoes. Help me.’

“So we spent quite a bit of time trying to help these guys and talking with these guys and not talking to them, but with them.”

Mayock also backed Rich Bisaccia, who was raised from Raiders special teams coordinator to interim coach after Gruden left.

“Look, I’ve known this guy for many years. Since he is the Special Teams Coach, he is involved with more players on our team than any other coach in our building.

“The irony is that I have supported him for many head coaching positions over the years, both in college and in the NFL, when I had another job.

“He has as much respect in the locker room, in our locker room, as any coach I’ve ever seen in my life.”

Bisaccia, who takes over a Raiders team at 3-2 over five weeks into the season, said he still considers Gruden a friend, but they haven’t had a dialogue since Monday.

“Nobody wants to be a head coach in this particular situation,” Bisaccia said. “No one wants to be put in front of this in these particular circumstances.

“But it’s an incredible opportunity. We look forward to the opportunity to play ball again.”
