Former Republican House Speaker John Boehner has criticized Donald Trump during the January 6 riot on the United States Capitol in his upcoming memoirs, saying the former president was directly responsible for the incident, which had left five dead and more than 140 police officers from the Capitol injured.
In an excerpt obtained by The New York Times, Boehner says Trump “instigated this bloody insurgency for nothing more than selfish reasons, perpetuated by the bullshit he shoveled since losing an election just last November. “.
The Ohio Republican, who left the House in 2015 after renewed fighting with the GOP’s Tea Party wing, also suggests Trump was a real terrorist.
“The legislative terrorism that I had witnessed as a speaker had now encouraged real terrorism,” Boehner writes in the book “On the House: A Washington Memoir,” which will be released later this month.
“I admit I was unprepared for what happened after the election – Trump refusing to accept the results and stoking the flames of the conspiracy that turned to violence at the headquarters of our democracy, the building that I once chaired, ”he adds.
Elsewhere in the colorful book, Boehner tears down Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) as “a reckless asshole who thinks he’s smarter than everyone else” and Fox News host Sean Hannity as a “nutcase.”
Boehner mainly gave birth in Washington after leaving office, working as a lobbyist for a cannabis group. He was calm during the final months of Trump’s presidency, speaking only after the insurgency on Capitol Hill – and without criticizing Trump by name.
But that seems to be the rule in Washington for politicians turned writers: save the juiciest pieces for your book.
