Johannesburg franchise owned by CSK likely to bring in Stephen Fleming, MS Dhoni

According to a report from Insidesport, the Johannesburg-based franchise in the new South Africa T20 Cricket League is ready to sign MS Dhoni and Stephen Fleming to lead the team in the inaugural edition. However, Dhoni’s involvement will be subject to BCCI’s approval.

The legacy of Indian Premier League is set to expand beyond continental borders into Africa, after all South Africa T20 Cricket League franchises were acquired by teams already competing in the Indian competition. The highest bid was reserved for the Johannesburg-based team and was ultimately won by the Chennai Super Kings for a colossal sum.

Now that the list of marquee players and team limits have been announced by the ASC, the next step is for the teams to establish a leadership structure and prepare all the cosmetics in the form of names, theme colors , etc. For instance, Bombay Indians have already established that their team will be called MI Cape Town and are currently working on signing a head coach and support staff.

However, a recent report by Insidesport made headlines after revealing that Chennai could retain their highly successful leadership core in the IPL by also making Stephen Fleming the head coach of the African franchise. The former New Zealand skipper has been with the team since the very first edition, making his debut as a player before becoming head coach in 2009. He led the yellow team to four IPL titles and two trophy trophies. the Champions League, as well as five finishes in second place in the league.

Fleming’s appointment will only be confirmed, however, once the team has found a name, which is likely to be Johannesburg Super Kings and is expected to be announced in the coming week.

“You will know the official name by this week. We are currently in talks with Stephen (Fleming) as we cannot think of a better person to continue CSK’s legacy in a new venture,” a CSK official told InsideSport website.

Another major addition to the squadron is expected to be MS Dhoni, the enigmatic skipper of CSK. Due to the restrictions imposed by the Board of Control for Cricket India on all Indian players participating in foreign T20 leagues, he is unlikely to play a role. Nonetheless, subject to permission from the governing body, the veteran could feature in an advisory league much like his involvement with Team India at World T20 2021.

“Dhoni’s involvement will depend on BCCIauthorization. He will not play but could play a role if the BCCI allows it,” the CSK official said.

It remains to be seen if the reports are true and await official confirmation from the Chennai Super Kings.
