Joe Root resigns: it’s official! Joe Root quits Test Captain under pressure as Test REBOOT fails miserably, Ben Stokes takes over
Despite being England’s most successful Test captain, Root was under immense pressure after the humiliating loss to Australia in the Ashes.
“After returning from the Caribbean tour and having had time to reflect, I have decided to step down as England Men’s Test captain. It has been the hardest decision I have had to make in my career, but after discussing it with my family and loved ones, I know the time has come,” Joe Root said in a statement.
The Ashes debacle prompted many former England captains, including Michael Atherton, to demand his resignation.
“I am extremely proud to have captained my country and I will look back on the last five years with immense pride. It was an honor to have done the job and to have been the caretaker of what is the pinnacle of English cricket, he added.
