Joe Biden admits ‘sanctions never deter’ after announcing more sanctions

President Joe Biden admitted on Thursday that more sanctions would not stop Russian President Vladimir Putin from continuing his war in Ukraine.

“I didn’t say that in fact the sanctions would deter him,” Biden told a reporter at a press conference in Brussels. “Sanctions never deter.”

The president complained that the media continued to highlight the failure of his tough sanctions to stop Putin from escalating his war in Ukraine.

He explained that the sanctions strategy was more focused on punishment, just hours after announcing more economic sanctions against Russia.

“The maintenance of the sanctions, the increase in the pain and the demonstration for which I asked for this meeting of NATO today is to be sure that after one month, we will maintain what we do”, has he declared.

When asked by a reporter if he thought the additional sanctions would force Putin to change course in Ukraine, Biden grew frustrated.

“That’s not what I said, you’re playing a game with me…the answer is no,” he replied.

“The most important thing is that we stick together,” he continued. “And the world continues to focus on this guy’s bully and all the innocent lives that are lost and ruined.”

Biden said it was important to make sure Europe was committed to continuing to exert long-term pressure on Putin.

“If you’re Putin and you think Europe is going to crack…they can take it all for another month,” he said. “We must remain fully, completely, completely united.”
