Jim Jordan supports plan to empower Patrick McHenry as temporary president

WASHINGTON — Republican presidential candidate Rep. Jim Jordan is throwing his support behind a plan to appoint Acting President Rep. Patrick McHenry at the head of the House until January, according to a source close to the matter, a decision which could reopen the House after two weeks of impasse.

Rank-and-file GOP lawmakers had begun to lose patience with Jordan’s efforts to continue his campaign for president after defeats in two consecutive runoff elections. There won’t be a third vote Thursday, but Jordan plans to stay in the race. This approach would give the Ohio congressman several months to rally support for his candidacy while allowing the House to move forward with expected votes on aid to Israel and Ukraine and maintaining funding for the government.
