Jesse Marsch confident Leeds United will do ‘very well’ as new manager praises players despite loss to Leicester in first game since Marcelo Bielsa replacement

Jesse Marsch believes his Leeds United side will come out of trouble in their Premier League relegation battle after an encouraging first game as manager.

A 1-0 loss to Leicester thanks to Harvey Barnes’ second-half goal meant the American started his Premier League career with a defeat, despite the Yorkshire side dominating the game throughout.

Despite having now gone 15 games without a clean sheet in the league, Leeds were extremely unlucky not to come away with three points after a much better performance, particularly at the back.

The visitors had a handful of chances to take the lead before falling behind, and were only fully opened once, with Barnes taking his chance with a cool finish.

It’s often said that in the Premier League, if you don’t seize opportunities, you end up regretting them later.

The defeat leaves Leeds 16th in the table and just two points above bottom three Burnley, 18th, with a game less on the Whites.

However, Marsch is more than confident that his team will not return to the league next season.

“Well, here’s what I knew coming in today is that this team works harder and is more committed to each other than any other team I’ve ever seen, and they ‘showed,” he told talkSPORT.

“What I learned today is that they’re also smart, their ability to put things into practice after four days of training and making a lot of our conversations and tactical videos seem relatively succinct for me was at a very high level.

“There are a lot of little things in there that I have to keep helping them be clear with, but overall a very good performance.

“Obviously the group is disappointed not to have a result, but I wanted to make sure they felt positive and it was our first step together and an incredibly good first start.

“I could see their heads were hanging [at full-time]I could see that they are disappointed, they are stressed at the moment because of the environment, because of the table.

“But we have to take those stresses out and stay focused on the things that are going to make a difference for us and control the things that we can control.

“If we keep doing that and if we keep applying the way we want to play, like we did today, everything will be fine.

“We created some great chances, another day we take the lead, so many amazing positives from what we were able to do today.”
