Jesse Lingard has revealed what an angry Manchester United fan shouted at him as he warmed up at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The England international watched on the sidelines as the Red Devils suffered a 5-0 beating against Liverpool.
Fans were understandably enraged at the scenes inside Old Trafford, with many leaving before the halftime whistle even ended.
There were boos at half-time and at the end of the game as the pressure mounts on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
A social media video quickly went viral showing Lingard turning around and telling supporters, “I’m not even on the pitch.”
The video caption read that the midfielder was “getting mistreated” by fans as he warmed up near the corner flag, prompting the response.
Lingard clarified what had happened, but insisted he was not being mistreated.
He wrote on Twitter: “It was not abuse! He said “work harder” like I’m not already doing it day in and day out! And I said ‘I’m not even on the pitch’ at the end !! “
Lingard wasn’t the only Manchester United player to send a message to fans after the game.
Cristiano Ronaldo took to Instagram after the horrific loss to say the fans deserve better than this.
He wrote: Sometimes the result is not what we are fighting for. Sometimes the score is not what we want.
“And it’s up to us, only us, because there’s no one else to blame.
“Our fans have been, once again, amazing in their continued support. They deserve better than that, much better, and it’s up to us to deliver them. It is now!”
