‘Jealous’ woman praised for offending friend with her views on dogs

They may be America’s favorite pet, but not everyone loves dogs. A woman was so offended by her friend’s anti-dog rhetoric that she took to Mumsnet to complain and ended up going viral.

In her post shared on the site’s AIBU (Am I being unreasonable?) forum on August 6, user creamysauce explained that she will soon be getting a French bulldog puppy. She was sharing her excitement with her friend, when her boyfriend said something that surprised her.

She said: “I asked him ‘Would you ever have a dog or would you like to own a pet?’

“She immediately burst out laughing and said, ‘No! I want to enjoy my life.”

Her friend explained that she didn’t want to be responsible for a pet, as it requires a lot of care and planning, and she likes to be spontaneous.

“She said, ‘I want to enjoy my life, own a pet, especially a dog, I won’t find spontaneity again,'” the poster wrote.

“I’d be worried about leaving him in the house too long, paying this and that, having to walk him around when I didn’t feel like it,” the poster said.

Creamysauce now suspects her friend of being jealous and trying to talk her out of getting a dog.

“I was a little offended by her comment, but she can be very frank/too honest for my taste,” she said. “What do you all think?

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) estimates that there are 76 million companion dogs in the United States. Unfortunately, approximately 3.1 million dogs are also abandoned at shelters each year. Common reasons include the cost of maintaining the animal, lack of time, inadequate facilities, or the owner having personal issues.

Although some shelters have reported an increase in the number of ‘pandemic puppies’ being handed over – one California shelter said it had double the usual number of arrivals in July 2021 – the majority of pets adopted during the pandemic are still at home .

However, shelters that have seen an increase in the number of pandemic pets cited owners who were unable or unwilling to care for their dog after it returned to “normal” life.

Mumsnet users felt creamysauce was taking her friend’s comment too “personally”, with the post receiving over 650 comments.

“Dogs are HUGE commitments – you just didn’t want to hear that?” Asked Asitch.

“You are ridiculous,” said PurpleMarie. “As a dog owner, everything she said was true. She didn’t do it on purpose either – you asked her outright and she responded with valid reasons.”

Countvoncount agreed, writing, “Everything she said is true! Huge responsibility, and if you like to be spontaneous, that’s limited with a dog.”

While ZeroFuchsGiven commented, “She’s not trying to talk you out of it or being jealous. She’s being honest, if you haven’t thought about all of these things, you’re not ready to own a pet.”
