It was an excellent decision by Indian skipper Rohit Sharma to go for the bowl first seeing the grass cover and cloud cover at the Oval. With Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah casting India’s spell, England were unable to cope with the Indian playmakers’ swing attack. England fielded a very strong Playing XI with Joe Root and Ben Stokes returning to the ODI squad.

But it was Jasprit Bumrah who had the last laugh when he dismissed two England batters in his first over. Bumrah started his charge at second over of the game where he registered a maiden 2 wickets above him. Bumrah’s first victim was Jason Roy. With a delivery thrown outside the off, Roy attempted to drive the ball towards the covers, but with the motion of the seam the ball suffered a huge inside edge to tip the stumps.

The next batter to bite the dust was Joe Root. Bumrah brought on Root to play a late shot with an extra bounce, which slashed the bat and landed safely in the hands of Rishabh Pant. The third hitter to fall prey to Bumrah’s antics was the dangerous man, Jonny Bairstow. The only batter Bumrah fired who didn’t score a duck.

Bumrah continued his charge and sent Bairstow back with a thick outside edge. Once again Rishabh Pant takes a superb hold as the Men in Blue wreak havoc on the England batters. Next to join the others in the pavilion was Liam Livingstone. While the others were sent off trying to defend themselves, Livingstone attempted an aggressive hay shot. The ball had an extra swing and went through the batter to crash into the leg stumps bringing in the 4th wicket for Bumrah.

Bowler Brydon Chase then became Bumrah’s fifth victim. An outstanding delivery from Bumrah castled the bowler as he too returned to the clubhouse. The final wicket came in the form of David Willey as Bumrah dislodges the leg stump to end England’s proceedings.
