Former England international Jason Hobson and retired Exeter Chiefs hooker Neil Clarke have joined the lawsuit against World Rugby, Rugby Football Union and Welsh Rugby Union.

Hobson and Clarke are now among 175 former players who have taken legal action against governing bodies for their alleged failure to protect players from concussion risks.

Both men were diagnosed with traumatic brain injury, early-onset dementia and probable CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy) following their sports career which ended in retirement in 2014.

They join the legal fight with 2003 World Cup winner Steve Thompson who says he has no memory of being in this tournament for England, Michael Lipman, Alix Popham, Adam Hughes, Neil Spence, Dan Scarbrough, Lenny Woodard and many more who want it. to remain anonymous.

Hobson said: “I don’t know what’s going on around the corner and it scares me. Your notepad wouldn’t be thick enough to list all the injuries I’ve had.

“I knew there would be physical issues, but not for a second did I think there would be a possible result of brain damage from playing and training.

“In 10 years I could be in a house. I could have complete dementia, not to mention a few words here and there.”

Clarke added: “I knew something was wrong [before the diagnosis]. My concentration levels, I forgot things, lost my train of thought, the constant ringing in my ears. All these little things would make me angry and lose my temper.

“It is by no means a financial reward for having suffered brain damage. But who knows how bad it is going to be? Who knows who is going to be left to fend for themselves?”
