The Premier League will use an overseas referee for the first time in history this weekend with Australia’s Jared Gillett set to referee the Watford v Newcastle clash.
The England elite announced on Monday that the 34-year-old has been selected to bow out as a referee on Saturday at Vicarage Road for the 3pm clash.
Gillett, 34, is a former top A-League referee in his home country and has presided over several major finals between 2010 and 2019.
In the 2018/19 season, after 159 A-League games, he emigrated to England.
Upon arriving in the country, Gillett joined the EFL and made his debut in English football in April 2019.
He rose through the ranks thanks to his experience as an international FIFA official.
Now Gillett has impressed enough to secure a promotion to Select Group 1 which means he will referee in the Premier League.
Gillett has already worked as an assistant video referee this season and he is no stranger to refereeing Watford matches.
He oversaw three Hornets games last season, including a 4-1 home win over Preston in the league.
Gillett also refereed their 0-0 draw at Sheffield on Wednesday and the 2-1 away loss to QPR.
