Jamie Carragher has branded Rio Ferdinand a ‘fan boy’ of Cristiano Ronaldo as the two pundits clashed over the Manchester United star on Twitter.
Ronaldo was left on the bench for Sunday’s 6-3 loss at Manchester City and Old Trafford legend Ferdinand insisted it was a mistake.
Manager Erik ten Hag claimed the decision was made out of “respect” for Ronaldo and Reds icon Carragher defended the United boss on Monday Night Football.
Ferdinand called out Carragher on Twitter and recalled the former Liverpool defender to a moment earlier this season when Ronaldo failed to shake his hand.
Posted alongside a video of himself explaining the point, Ferdinand said: “Carra, are you still upset he didn’t shake your hand at Old Trafford?
“The hardest thing to do in football is to score goals…”
In response, Carragher told the former United defender to stop being a Ronaldo ‘fan boy’.
Carragher tweeted: “No I’m thrilled [the video] gone viral!

Ronaldo has started just one Premier League game this season – a 4-0 hammering away at Brentford – after trying and failing to leave Old Trafford during the summer.
The 37-year-old Portuguese legend is the all-time top scorer but questions persist over his place in Ten Hag’s squad.
And Ferdinand said he had no idea which WhatsApp group Carragher mentioned. “Drop it boy, I want that same energy with Roy Keane next time you’re in the ffs studio. Stop getting harassed.
Then, to show there was no malice involved, Carragher and Neville made light of the swap as Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football ended where it was mentioned Keane could feature in seven days.
Neville, who played alongside Ferdinand and Keane, joked, “You’re going to get harassed again,” to Carragher, who replied, “He wants to get into that Whatsapp Rio group!”
Laughing, Neville then asked to be added, which made Ferdinand laugh on Twitter.
