Tuesday marked a full year of work for Leon Rose as president of the Knicks team. The Knicks are 18-17, better than many pundits predicted, but the story stacked against Rose is worrying: this is James L. Dolan’s 20th season in which the Knicks are 661-982 – resulting in the lowest winning percentage in the league. in this range, at .402.
The top three regular season winning percentages during Dolan’s reign belong to the three Texas teams: San Antonio .688 (1131-512), Dallas .599 (988-662) and Houston .576 (949-698) ).
When the Knicks selected Obi Toppin with the No.8 pick in the November draft, Toppin was billed as Julius Randle’s potential successor in the frontcourt. Instead, Randle, who has a very friendly squad option for next season at $ 19.8 million, will play in his first All-Star game on Sunday. Without warning, Randle became the offensive foothold for coach Tom Thibodeau, who is the closest thing to a marquee signing the Knicks in the offseason.
Former Knicks team president Dave Checketts will join Burnley’s board in June and make them the fifth club in the 20-team English Premier League club with an NBA connection at the property level. Arsenal is owned by Stan Kroenke, whose son Josh is the governor and chairman of the Denver Nuggets team and also sits on the Arsenal board. Aston Villa is co-owned by Wes Edens, one of the principal owners of the Milwaukee Bucks. Crystal Palace is owned by the Philadelphia 76ers duo of Josh Harris and David Blitzer. And LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers has owned minority Liverpool since 2011.
The diversity of the overall NBA landscape has remained largely unchanged after the coaching moves in Minnesota and Atlanta over the past nine days. Of the league’s top 60 positions, only 16 are occupied by non-white coaches and front office chiefs.
With an estimated player pool of over 75% black, the league has just seven black head coaches. Nate McMillan replaced ousted Lloyd Pierce in Atlanta as interim coach of the Hawks and joined JB Bickerstaff of Cleveland, Dwane Casey of Detroit, Stephen Silas of Houston, Doc Rivers of Philadelphia, Monty Williams of Phoenix and Tyronn Lue of Los Angeles Clippers.
James Borrego of Charlotte, who is Mexican-American, and Erik Spoelstra of Miami, who is Filipino-American, are the other two coaches of color in the league.
The six black executives with primary decision-making authority at the front office are Koby Altman of Cleveland, Troy Weaver of Detroit, Rafael Stone of Houston, James Jones of Phoenix, Brian Wright of San Antonio and Masai Ujiri of Toronto. Gersson Rosas of Minnesota was the first Latino in league history to lead a team’s basketball operations.
Rosas hired Chris Finch, who is white and had worked with him in Houston, to replace Ryan Saunders as the Timberwolves head coach on February 22. in the middle of the season rather than promoting David Vanterpool, who is black, from the inside, or commissioning a wider search. At the front office, Rosas hired two Indo-Americans, Sachin Gupta and Robby Sikka, and Joe Branch, a former black gamer agent.
