CNN’s Jake Tapper once again called out elected Republicans who lie and peddle conspiracy theories, asking, “Why should I put one of them on TV?”
Since January, Sunday’s State of the Union show has not booked any elected Republican who supported ex-President Donald Trump’s election lies.
Tapper, appearing on Tuesday’s “New Day” show, compared some Republicans to Doritos. “You can’t do just one,” he says. “You keep lying and lying and lying.”
He listed some of the lies pushed by Republicans in recent weeks – election lies from Trump and baseless claims that President Joe Biden wants to “steal your burgers for climate change” to their COVID-19-denier appeasement and followers of the crazy QAnon conspiracy theory.
“The election lie in itself is anti-democracy, and it sows the seeds of ignorance among the people, and obviously has the potential to incite violence,” Tapper said. “But beyond that, if you’re willing to lie about it, why aren’t you willing to lie?”
“I believe this country needs a strong, prosperous, healthy and evidence-based Republican Party,” Tapper admitted.
“We need these debates. But we cannot have these debates if one side of the argument is unwilling to stick to the norms and the facts, ”he concluded. “How am I supposed to believe what they say?” If they’re willing to lie about Joe Biden wanting to steal your burgers and QAnon and the big election lie, what aren’t they willing to lie about? Why should I put one of them on TV? ”
