Jadon Sancho to join Declan Rice in his very first beer – if his mum allows it – as Man United goal aims for Euro 2020 success after overcoming injury fears

Jadon Sancho is relieved that his injury issues are behind him ahead of Euro 2020, but has admitted he should ask his mum if he can celebrate the win this summer with a beer.

The Borussia Dortmund winger suffered a muscle injury in March and missed the Champions League quarter-final clashes with former club Manchester City.

At the time, Erdin Terzic’s men had only six games left and struggled to qualify for elite European competition – until Sancho’s return.

The 21-year-old scored four goals, had two assists and two Man of the Match awards as BVB finished third in the Bundesliga and beat RB Leipzig 4-1 to win the German Cup.

His return to form and fitness will also have put a pretty big smile on Gareth Southgate’s face ahead of the start of the European Championship.

As Croatia looms large in England’s Group D debut at Wembley on Sunday, Sancho insists he knows he has to work to get back to his best.

“To be fair, when I got injured I was disappointed because I was in such great shape,” he told talkSPORT’s Faye Carruthers.

“But I knew I had to come back even stronger and obviously that’s what I did in my recovery as well.

“So I was just focusing on myself, I was in the gym and I was working on a few things that I had to work on.

“I came back even stronger, pushing us through. I think we were about sixth or seventh in the league and we had to qualify for the Champions League.

“So we had goals, especially to win the Pokal, I’m happy to come back and lift the team with some motivation and some goals and assists.”

Although the former Man City winger has been linked with a move to his rivals in red at Old Trafford, the goal is only to help the Three Lions at Euro 2020.

The young Southgate side are vastly different from Terry Venables’ side at Euro ’96, which gained notoriety for their escapades.

“I think I’ll join him,” Sancho told talkSPORT. “I have never had beer!

“I’m not really a heavy drinker so I don’t know about that.

“I have to ask my mom if I’m allowed to!” “
