Jack Wilshere reveals he was ‘a week away’ from retirement before Roy Hodgson and Watford masseur set up move to Denmark which ‘came out of nowhere’

talkSPORT host Jack Wilshere has revealed he was just a week away from retirement before Roy Hodgson helped arrange a surprise move to Denmark.

The former Arsenal star joined Superliga club AGF Aarhus in February after some time away, but the move wouldn’t have been possible without the Watford boss and the club’s masseur.

Wilshere has since returned from his time in Europe but has a return offer, although he has yet to decide where his future lies.

Before the move to Denmark, things were also up in the air, before Hodgson got involved.

Wilshere had left Bournemouth in 2021 and was weighing his options at the start of the year, then the option to play abroad arose.

“I was talking to a few teams and then it came out of nowhere,” he revealed on Drivetime.

“It was actually set up by Roy Hodgson who actually ran the manager who was there.

“He had a coach with him at Crystal Palace, Dave Reddington, and he went there in the summer, so he kind of set him up at the end.

“I was talking to a lot of clubs and then I just thought, I’ve been in this position for ages, I just need to make a decision and I thought, yeah, I’m going to go.

“Roy was at Watford, I have a good friend at Watford who is actually a masseur and he knew I was friends with him and they spoke and it went from there.”

Despite interest and links with various teams following his departure from Bournemouth, the former West Ham man ended his spell away from the game by picking the team that wanted him most.

He said that [AGF] was the only concrete offer, there were others talking, I was probably only a week away from stopping [playing].”

The offer is to return to Denmark, but Wilshere, 30, needs some time to reflect as he admitted playing in a foreign country can be a “lonely” experience.

When asked what he was going to do next, he replied, “That’s a really good question, what do I want to do? I do not know. I need a few weeks.
