Exeter winger Jack Nowell has only made three appearances this season due to injuries

Jack Nowell has suffered yet another injury setback that threatens his involvement in the decisive phase of Exeter’s Gallagher Premiership title push.

Nowell sprained a knee ligament in Saturday’s 41-10 win over Worcester and faces a sideline spell that could prevent him from making the final four rounds of the regular season and play-offs.

It’s a big setback for the England wing, who has only made three appearances in a campaign marked by toe and hamstring injuries.

“Jack will be out for at least a few weeks. He unfortunately trampled his MCL in that awkward tackle, as he fell,” said Exeter boss Rob Baxter.

“It’s a blow to him who just got back in shape and looks good and clean.

“He really took his time in rehab to get back to 100%, so it’s a disappointment for him and for us.

“I hope it won’t be the end of his season and we’ll see it before the end.”

Nowell’s injuries – the hamstring problem struck as he was about to return from toe surgery – kept him from a significant challenge for the selection of the British and Irish Lions ahead of the summer tour in South Africa.

The 28-year-old appeared in last season’s European and Premiership finals with ruptured toe ligaments due to his determination to make the biggest fortnight in Exeter history.

Due to his time in the treatment room, he has not been capped by England since the 2019 World Cup, missing two Six Nations and an autumn campaign.

“Right after the Worcester game he was pretty clueless, but he’s a really positive character who looks for the positives whenever he can,” Baxter said.

“I’ve had a few conversations with him this week, one on the phone and two in person, and all he’s focused on now is getting in shape and being available for possible end-of-season games.

“He’s brilliant like that and we’re going to give him every chance to make it into our season.”
