Aston Villa fans booed Jack Grealish and chanted “you used to play for a big club” to their former hero upon his return to Villa Park.
Grealish was on the bench for Man City and came on for the dying minutes on his first visit to his childhood club.
His new club won 2-1 with goals from Ruben Dias and Bernardo Silva to grab the three points.
Grealish wasn’t sure what reaction he was going to get from supporters after his £ 100million move to the Premier League champions.
He admitted in a pre-match interview that he wouldn’t celebrate if he scored and vowed to applaud all four sides of the stadium.
There was a handful of boos as he emerged from the dugout, but there was also applause as he reached the corner of the sideline.
Some fans sang “you were playing for a big club” as he prepared to play a role if his manager needed it.
He entered the game with just a few minutes to go and was greeted with loud boos as he waited to enter.
Many supporters also applauded their former hero, with Amazon Prime commentators pointing out that there was a lot of respect.
Dias gave Manchester City the lead after 27 minutes when he encountered Raheem Sterling’s cut and found the corner below 20 yards.
Silva doubled City’s lead in stunning style as the visitors hit Villa at the break just before half-time.
Fernandinho freed Gabriel Jesus and he crossed for Silva to make a volley just inside the box.
Ollie Watkins returned a goal for Villa two minutes after the restart when he met Douglas Luiz’s corner to shoot the post.
Steven Gerrard’s side threatened City’s goal but couldn’t get back into the game.
