Brice Samba’s stoppage to deny that Morgan Gibbs-White had won the semi-final and it sparked a rapid pitch invasion from thousands of Forest fans.

Most celebrated with their own players, but one walked into Sheffield United’s technical area and charged the Blades striker Sharp with his head.

Sharp, who had been a substitute, was knocked to the ground with Sheffield United boss Paul Heckingbottom saying: “This is an assault. We saw one of our players attacked.

“He is shaken, bleeding, angry. It will be processed. »

Forest were quick to condemn the incident, saying the offender would be subject to a “lifetime ban” from the club and issued an apology to Sharp.

Police later confirmed that a 31-year-old man had been arrested.

Nottinghamshire Police Chief Inspector Paul Hennessy said: ‘A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault in connection with this incident. He remains in custody and will be questioned by officers.

“Our investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing. We have spoken to the player concerned and we are working with the two clubs who are supporting us in our investigation.”

The incident eclipsed Forest’s win, where the Reds’ victory secured a play-off final showdown against Huddersfield on Sunday May 29 at Wembley Stadium and the possibility of a top-flight comeback for the first time since 1999.

The vile attack on Sharp has stunned talkSPORT hosts Jamie O’Hara and Jason Cundy, who want the author to have the book thrown at him.

O’Hara said on The Sports Bar: ‘This is a disgusting incident. We talked about it before we even saw the incident and that’s what we’re talking about. It’s dangerous, it’s shocking and it has to stop.

“Pitch invasions have to stop because something like this is going to happen and it has happened.”

Cundy added: “First of all I hope Billy Sharp is okay, shocking shocking pictures. The dude is running towards him at full speed, he’s a big boy and Billy Sharp doesn’t see it coming.

“It’s an attack. At worst it’s a body burden, it’s nice, it looks like a headbutt.

“It’s a shameful thing to see, it shocked me to see that. It’s a prison sentence right there, that’s how I see it. It’s an assault.

“He has a lot of problems this guy.”

Cundy later added, “He doesn’t see it coming, he’s relaxed, he turns his head and this thug – that’s a big fat thing too – puts his big bald head right in Billy Sharp’s face to the beat.”

Thankfully, it appears Sharp is making a full recovery from the incident, but O’Hara hopes authorities will take the necessary steps to ensure an incident like this doesn’t happen again.

O’Hara said: “That’s what annoys me about English culture, something doesn’t get done until it’s too late. We react to an incident that occurs but it must be stopped immediately.

“It’s the worst attack I’ve seen on a football pitch. It’s shocking.
