‘It’s getting worse’ – Simon Jordan reacts to damning transfer update as Chelsea lead Manchester United in race for Frenkie de Jong despite lower bid for Barcelona star

Chelsea are the likeliest destination for Frenkie de Jong this summer, despite their offer being lower than Manchester United.

That’s according to talkSPORT football correspondent Alex Crook, who discussed ‘the transfer saga of the summer’, which the Red Devils could be on the losing side of.

Tuchel’s side are now in the lead to sign De Jong from Barcelona

The Barcelona star has been at the center of speculation this summer with Erik ten Hag determined to bring the Dutch midfielder to Old Trafford as part of his new look.

However, a dispute over unpaid wages at the Nou Camp has complicated a deal, with £17m of unpaid money owed to him proving a source of contention between the player and the club.

Meanwhile, Barca president Joan Laporta has reportedly claimed there was criminality by the club’s former bosses in the contract extension De Jong signed in 2020, and wants the player to return to the original deal which he signed when he arrived from Ajax.

As a result, United struggled to make progress in their pursuit of the central midfielder, paving the way for Chelsea to launch with their own offer.

The Blues are now seen as favorites to land De Jong, although Crook has revealed the London club are actually offering less than United.

Speaking on White and Jordan, Crook said: “It’s the saga of the summer. I received a message last night that Man United expect developments in terms of De Jong’s future one way or another in the next 24 hours.

“We could hear some news from Barcelona today. Barcelona, on the other hand, are pushing for De Jong to accept his 50% pay cut or leave the club.

“Chelsea, for their part, are confident he will accept a fee of £70million, so if he leaves it will become a direct choice between Chelsea and Manchester United.

“Because Manchester United sat on their hands on this one, Chelsea seem like the likeliest destination.

“I think it will be really embarrassing for Richard Arnold and John Murtough regarding a player who Erik ten Hag has made it clear he wants to build his new Red Devils revolution, and he ends up joining a Premier League rival.”

Asked by Simon Jordan if Chelsea are doing anything different from Man United in the negotiations, Crook said: “I don’t believe so.

“In fact, it was suggested to me that the transfer fee might actually be lower than what Manchester United are offering.”

In response to this, Jordan said, “Oh my God, it’s getting worse!”
