It’s a girl! Tulsa Zoo celebrates the birth of a baby tiger

Tulsa Zoo announced the birth of a baby tiger from Malaysia on International Tiger Day. The baby was born on July 11 to mother Ava and father Tahan thanks to the Tulsa Zoo’s continued participation in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Malay Tiger Species Survival Plan, according to the zoo. Officials said the program was aimed at ensuring a sustainable population of these animals in the care of the Tulsa Zoo. Malaysian tigers are native to Peninsula Malaysia and are Malaysia’s national animal, but there are fewer than 250 in the wild due to threats such as habitat loss and poaching, according to the zoo. Zoo officials will announce later when visitors can see the cub. Ava and the Cub will remain in a non-exhibit area until officials are satisfied the Cub can safely navigate the exhibits, officials said. Ava’s Baby Birth is the sixth Malaysian tiger cub to be born at the Tulsa Zoo.
