Italy advance to Euro 2020 round of 16, extend unbeaten run to 29 matches with victory over Switzerland

Italy qualified for the knockout stages of Euro 2020 with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Switzerland on Wednesday night.

Two goals from either side of the half from Manuel Locatelli and a late strike from Ciro Immobile bolstered Italy’s credentials as a serious contender for the tournament’s victory after beating Turkey by the same score there was five days.

The result also saw Roberto Mancini’s men extend their unbeaten run to 29 games and keep 10 consecutive clean sheets.

Italy, who are the first team to advance to the round of 16, believed they broke the deadlock in the 19th minute when Giorgio Chiellini categorically entered a corner, however VAR ruled out the goal for handball.

And the veteran defender’s night worsened moments later when he was forced off the pitch with a suspected hamstring injury.

Despite the initial setbacks, Italy were not put off as Locatelli made a reduction from Domenico Berardi in the 26th minute.

While Switzerland struggled to create meaningful chances against a solid defense, Italy doubled their lead thanks to Locatelli seven minutes after the restart.

Sassuolo’s midfielder caught a pass from Nicolo Barella and took off 20 yards to leave Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer pinned to the ground as the ball hit the back of the net.

Switzerland landed their first and only shot on target when Gianluigi Donnarumma made a smart save to push Steven Zuber off.

Immobile missed two chances to add to his goal tally as he failed to hit the target from good shooting position.

However, the Lazio forward scored his second goal in a row at Euro 2020 when his powerful training beat Sommer, who should have done better, with one minute remaining.
