‘It was an accident!’ – Fabinho responds to hilarious moment his goal celebration went wrong against Benfica

Fabinho admitted his knee slide against Benfica “didn’t work out”, joking that the dry pitch was to blame for his blunder.

The Liverpool midfielder was part of the celebrations as Ibrahim Konaté opened the scoring for the Reds in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final clash in Portugal, a game they won 3-1 .

As he ran towards the corner flag, the Brazilian attempted a knee slide alongside his teammate, but instead flew after his knee got caught in the turf, leaving him in a crumpled heap on the floor.

With no damage, Fabinho saw the funny side of the incident and suggested he was determined to try again to prove that his dramatic fall was down to the condition of the pitch alone.

Asked by Liverpool’s official website if he needed to work on his knee pads, he replied: “Yes! I don’t know if I can celebrate like that because I never do that when I score.

“I always get up, I never do a toboggan. But when I saw Ibou running to do a knee slide, I said ‘Ah, we’re doing that too’ because I was happy with the goal, I was happy for him.

“It didn’t work very well.

“I think for my next celebration I’ll try to do it again to show that it was an accident and the pitch was a bit dry and that was the problem!”

Since joining Merseyside, Fabinho has scored 10 goals in total, but with seven of them to come this season, it’s clear something clicked for the midfielder.

When asked if there was a reason behind his improved record in front of goal, Fabinho replied: “I don’t know. In set pieces, I’m more inside the box, so that helps a lot.

“Penalties, of course, help a lot.

“It’s the first season I’ve taken penalties here. I always try to be ready for the opportunity to take a penalty or take a corner or a free kick to be alive inside the box. The ball just comes towards me and I just score.

My first part of the job is to defend well, to try to help the defense and protect the defense. This is the most important for me. I’m always happy when you keep a clean sheet, when you’re really consistent in defense, when the other team doesn’t have much of a chance to score.

” It’s my job. As number 6, that’s what I want. But, of course, when I have the opportunity to score or give an assist, I’m always happy too.
