Israeli-Palestinian conflict: Biden comments on disputed strike in Gaza hospital

Family of Hamas hostage Rimon Kirsht makes tearful appeal

US President Joe Biden said the explosion at a Gaza hospital appears to have been the result of “the other team”, as uncertainty remains over who was responsible for the deaths of potentially hundreds of civilians.

An explosion and the resulting fire were recorded yesterday evening around 7 p.m. (local time) in the parking lot of Al-Ahli Arab Baptist Hospital in northern Gaza.

The Hamas-run Health Ministry said nearly 500 people were killed following the explosion.

Hamas blamed an Israeli airstrike for the explosion; Israel said the fire was caused by a failed rocket launched from the enclave by Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

Speaking in Tel Aviv with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday, Mr. Biden said he was “deeply outraged” by the incident, but that “it appears to have been done by the other team, and not by (Israel).”

He added: “We must also keep in mind that Hamas does not represent all of the Palestinian people and has only brought them suffering. »

Biden: hospital strike led by “another team”

President Joe Biden told Benjamin Netanyahu that it appears the explosion at a Gaza hospital was caused “by the other team.” Rachel Sharp reports.

Speaking alongside the Israeli Prime Minister in Tel Aviv, he said he was “deeply outraged and saddened” by the incident, which left hundreds dead.

“I am deeply saddened and outraged by the explosion that occurred yesterday at the Gaza hospital. From what I’ve seen, it looks like this was done by the other team, not you. But there are a lot of people who are not sure about it, so we have to overcome a lot of things,” he said.

Israel blamed the hospital attack on Palestinian Islamic Jihad. The PIJ denied any involvement while Hamas blamed Israel.

He added: “We must also keep in mind that Hamas does not represent all of the Palestinian people and has only brought them suffering. »

Israel says there has been an ‘increase in failed launches’ from Gaza

Israel claimed there was an “increase in the number of launch failures” from Gaza.

Daniel Hagari, spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), said: “Over the past few days, there has been an increase in the number of failed launches hitting the Gaza Strip.

“Meanwhile, the terrorist organization Hamas continues to use residents of the Gaza Strip as human shields and does not hesitate to risk their lives to cover up its attacks”

According to the Israeli army, some 450 rockets have failed in Gaza since fighting began on October 7.

These claims have not been verified.

US downplays cancellation of Biden Mideast summit

The Biden administration has tried to downplay the significance of the scrapping of President Joe Biden’s meeting with Middle East leaders.

After visiting Israel, Mr. Biden was scheduled to travel to Jordan to meet with leaders of Jordan, Egypt and the Palestinian Authority.

But after hundreds of civilians were killed in an explosion at a Gaza hospital, King Abdullah of Jordan and President Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian Authority withdrew from the meeting.

In a briefing with reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Tel Aviv, NSC spokesman John Kirby insisted the cancellation was because President Abbas observed a three-day mourning.

“I mean, the main reason Abbas pulled out of the meeting in Jordan was because of three days of mourning, which of course is completely understandable culturally,” he said .

“I mean, he absolutely had to come home, and we understand that. And without him, it certainly made the kind of discussions we wanted to have in Amman more difficult.

“But then again, they’ll talk again on the way home.”

Mr Kirby said Mr Biden spoke to King Abdullah and President Abbas on Tuesday evening after the hospital explosion – and would speak to them again as he leaves Israel later in the daytime.

John Kirby said US President Joe Biden would address Gulf leaders soon.

Putin calls hospital strike on civilians a ‘catastrophe’

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the attack on a hospital in Gaza, which killed hundreds of Palestinians, was a terrible catastrophe that showed the need to end the conflict.

“As for the strike on the hospital, the tragedy that occurred there is a terrible event,” Putin said after his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing. “Hundreds of deaths and hundreds of injuries is of course a catastrophe.

“I really hope that this will be a signal that we need to end this conflict as quickly as possible. Regardless, we must focus on the possibility of starting contacts and negotiations.”

Russian efforts to negotiate a ceasefire in Israel were blocked by the United States and the United Kingdom at the United Nations Security Council, due to the Kremlin’s failure to condemn Hamas for the incursion murder in Israel on October 7.

Experts were also quick to point to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as proof that the Kremlin is not interested in peace, nor in respecting the rules of war, and does not target civilians.

German Chancellor condemns firebombing of Berlin synagogue

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz strongly condemned the firebombing of a Berlin synagogue, saying that “we will never accept attacks being carried out against Jewish institutions.”

Attackers threw two incendiary devices at the synagogue in the center of the capital early Wednesday morning, police said, as anti-Semitic incidents increased in the country following escalating violence in the Middle East.

The Kahal Adass Jisroel community wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Unknown people threw two Molotov cocktails from the street.”

Dozens of police officers were investigating in front of the synagogue in the Mitte district, and the entire street adjacent to the building was cordoned off and closed to traffic.

Kirby says Biden will ask Israel ‘tough questions’

NSC spokesman John Kirby said President Joe Biden would ask “tough questions” of Israel when he meets with Benjamin Netanyahu in Tel Aviv.

“He will ask difficult questions. He will ask them as a friend – as a true friend of Israel. But he will ask them some questions,” he told reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Israel Tuesday night.

His comments come after hundreds of civilians were killed in an explosion at a Gaza hospital.

Mr. Kirby added that the president had asked the national security team to “gather as much information and context as possible so that we can learn more about how this happened.”

After arriving in Tel Aviv, Mr Biden said it appeared the attack had been carried out by “the other team” – not Israel.
