Israeli Health Ministry asks gun permit holders to protect hospitals

Israel’s Health Ministry is asking civilians with weapons permits to provide security at hospitals as the war against Hamas continues.

The Times of Israel reported that the Health Ministry is asking gun permit holders to volunteer to provide security, both in hospitals “and in health care facilities.”

Hospitals and health centers in Israel could face a lack of security as some guards serve in the army and have been called up to serve against Hamas. Therefore, the longer the war with Hamas lasts, the greater the need for civilian volunteers to provide security.

Civilian gun ownership in Israel is low compared to a country like the United States, but Israeli leaders are working to expand gun ownership by speeding up the permitting process.

This expedition contributed to an arms race in areas like Samaria, where on October 11, 2023, Breitbart News noted that unarmed residents were flocking to offices to fill out the paperwork needed to obtain a firearms permit.

The Jewish News Syndicate noted: “The local Maccabi health clinic was teeming with crowds jostling for gun permit applications. It was tense but enjoyable as doctors rushed to fill out forms. There was also a queue at town hall, as those seeking a firearms license went through the process of showing proof of residency.

On October 10, 2023, Breitbart News highlighted that Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir announced that 10,000 assault rifles had been purchased and distributed to civil security teams in communities along the borders of the country.

Ben Gvir has been criticized as “extremist” in the past, but he was elected in 2022 when he came out in favor of arming more Israelis – creating an armed “national guard” – in response to riots in Israeli Arabs against Israeli Jews.

On August 10, 2023, the Israel Times noted that Defense Minister Yoav Gallant opposed Ben Gvir’s “national guard,” calling it a “private militia.”
