Participants were celebrating the religious holiday of Lag B’Omer, he said.
Another emergency service, Magen David Adom (MDA), said through a spokesperson that at least 50 people were injured in the rally, 20 of them seriously.
The injuries were the result of overcrowding and not the collapse of a structure at the site, spokesman Zaki Heller said, refuting initial reports that the staging had collapsed.
In addition to MDA ambulances, six helicopters were used to transfer the injured to hospitals, Heller said.
This is a developing story.
