Islam critic, police officer attacked by knife-wielding assailant

Mannheim police confirmed in a statement on Friday that a “major police operation” was underway at the market square in the German city of Mannheim.

“A rescue helicopter is also being used. No further information can be provided at this time,” police added.

Earlier on Friday, the German newspaper reported Picture this German activist and Islam critic Michael Stürzenberger was attacked by a knife-wielding assailant in Mannheim.

The attacker was allegedly shot dead by the police

According to initial reports, two other people were stabbed, including a police officer.

The attacker was reportedly shot dead by police on the spot.

The attack occurred during a political rally in the area.

Stürzenberger, a right-wing activist, served as leader of the German Freedom Party between 2013 and 2016. He is known for his harsh criticism of Islam and his anti-Islam views.
