Irish MEP Clare Daly loses her seat – POLITICO

“I was honored to have been able to use this platform as a powerful voice for peace, antimilitarism and neutrality,” she said of her time in the European Parliament. “This result does not constitute a rejection of these ideas.”

But Daly was less restrained in his comments to journalists covering the Dublin Marathon counting session. “You had no interest in speaking to me for five years, so I have no interest in speaking to you,” she said, distancing herself from journalists, notably from the Irish channel RTÉ, and refusing to answer the questions.

Daly rose to international prominence for his stance on Russia and China, criticizing EU military support for Kiev and voting against a European Parliament resolution calling for the creation of a court charged with prosecuting Russian leaders for the crime of aggression against Ukraine.

A 2022 investigation by the Irish Times found that Daly, along with southern Irish MEP Mick Wallace, were widely covered by state-controlled media in Russia, China and elsewhere, widely portrayed as supporters of the policies of these governments.

But she has also attracted famous fans, with actress Susan Sarandon and singer Annie Lennox congratulating her in the run-up to the election.

It is not yet clear whether Wallace will retain his seat in the European Parliament as counting continues in the Ireland South constituency.

Early figures suggest he will have to fight to keep his seat, although he could benefit from transfers from other candidates – a key part of Ireland’s single transferable vote system, which can make the final result difficult to predict.
