Gujarat Titans captain Hardik Pandya said he saved his best spell for the final after winning their first IPL trophy by beating Rajasthan Royals by seven wickets. Hardik further added that he continued to bowl the right lengths and was rewarded for discipline with three wickets.
The Gujarat Titans scripted a fairy tale run in their debut season as they lifted the IPL trophy with victory over Rajasthani Royals by seven wickets. In a low-scoring affair, RR elected to strike first, but their decision turned out to be grossly incorrect. GT played remarkably well to limit the opposition to 130/9. Hardik Pandya being the skipper of the forward-led side as he picked three wickets while conceding just 17 runs. R Sai Kishore picked a few wickets as mohamed chami and Yash Dayal scalped a single wicket apiece.
Hardik hasn’t played every game for GT, but every time he has played in the tournament he has delivered. Reflecting on his move to the final, Hardik said he had saved his best performance for the most important occasion.
“I wanted to show at the right time what I worked hard for. Today was the day from a bowling perspective where I saved the best for the best. Second ball of my spell when I took Sanju out, I saw that if you hit the wicket hard and hit the seam, something will happen. It’s about sticking to the right lengths, getting the batters to hit the right shots,” Hardik said during the postgame presentation.
Hardik scored 34 points in GT’s victory while David Miller played an undefeated 32-point cameo from 19 balls. Shubhman Gill was the top scorer with an unbeaten 45 points for the team. Hardik hit number 4 throughout the tournament for the team and he performed very well. He scored 487 points in 15 games at 44.27 and a strike rate of 131.27.
GT had a brilliant bowling offense that included quality point guards like Mohammed Shami and Lockie Ferguson. Rashid Khan was the team’s top spinner and youngster Yash Dayal also made important contributions to the tournament. Summing up the campaign, Hardik said bowlers often win games and so the team has focused on specialist bowling play.
“It’s the good example for any team in the world. If you can play as a team and build a good unity with genuine people, wonders can happen. Me and Ashu pa, we like bowling well The batters obviously can contribute, but most of the time I’ve seen in cricket T20 – it’s a batter’s game but the bowlers win you games,” he said.
RR were a brilliant team in the IPL 2022 as they ended up runners up in the tournament. Joe Buttler was the top scorer in the team and in the tournament. Youngsters like Kuldeep Sen have also performed brilliantly for them. Reflecting on the team’s campaign, Samson said he was proud of the team and congratulated GT.
“This season is really special for us. We were able to play good cricket and give the fans happy times. All the young people, the seniors played well as a team, I am proud of my team. Congratulations to the Gujarat Titans,” commented Samson.
