IPL 2023 | BCCI will introduce the substitute player rule from the coming season

Tactical substitutions could play a key role in the upcoming season as BCCI announced a substitution rule ahead of next year’s edition. The concept was first tested at the recent Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy where teams were allowed to bring in a substitute player during the game.

Tactics could take center stage in the upcoming IPL as BCCI announced a replacement concept starting next season. The concept was recently introduced in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The board has sent a note to all teams informing them that a substitute player will be allowed to play a more active role.

“Also note that from the 2023 IPL season, a tactical/strategic concept will be introduced to add a new dimension to the IPL, in which a team substitute player can take a more active part in an IPL match. relating to the same will be released shortly,” the note read.

It is still unclear whether the system will be similar to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy where teams named four substitutes in their roster during the draw. One of them was cleared for use as an impact player before the end of the 14th in both innings. The introduction of the new rule could lead to teams forming their line-ups tactically while planning the use of substitute players.

The same type of rule is in place in the BBL where teams are allowed to substitute a member of their starting XI at the ten mark on the first innings.
