Lucknow Super Giants mentor Gautam Gambhir says captain KL Rahul would have to take calculated risks to succeed in the upcoming IPL season. The season will kick off on March 26 and Lucknow Super Giants will play their opening match against Gujarat Titans on March 28 at Wankhede Stadium.
The expectation for the IPL is high among the fans as the season is due to start on March 26. The tournament will feature ten teams with the addition of two new entrants in the form of Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans. LSG will start their campaign on March 28 against Gujarat Titans with them to be managed by KL Rahul and they also roped Gautam Gambhir as a mentor before the season.
Ahead of the season, Gambhir felt that Rahul would have to take calculated risks to succeed in the tournament.
“Every captain should learn to take risks. I would like Rahul to take risks and unless you take calculated risks, you won’t know whether you will succeed or not. Also, this time, Quinton de Kock will be our wicket keeper so without holding duties he can be free and relaxed, focus on his batting and leadership,” Gambhir said, PTI reported.
“At the end of the day, it’s the leader who is the standard bearer for a team and so it’s Rahul who will lead the Lucknow Supergiants on and off the pitch. For me, it’s important to have KL Rahul the batter, who is also the captain of the team, rather than KL Rahul, the captain, who also bats.Hope I can make you understand the difference.
Several players have caught the world’s attention with their performances in the IPL. However, Gambhir said there is no guarantee that KL Rahul will become India’s captain after playing in IPL.
“Know one thing. There is a difference between being talked about as India’s future captain and finally being named India’s captain,” he said,
“I never believed that you should play in the IPL, watching the national team. The IPL is a platform to express yourself. You can grow as a leader, but there is no guarantee that there is a period of time in which the IPL will help you become India captain,” added Gambhir
Lucknow has a good set of versatile players in their squad. The team bought Jason Holder, Krunal PandyaDeepak Hooda in the Mega Auction and Gambhir revealed the reason why they went for Versatile Players in the Mega Auction.
“When we were preparing our team strategy, we wanted more all-rounders and we got the approval of our president, Dr. Sanjiv Goenka. I’m honored that he gave me so much respect and sometimes I wonder if I deserve so much praise from him,” he said. “It always helps to have multi-dimensional cricketers because they give you more options. It’s always good to have hitters who can contribute in two or three overs,” he explained.
