IPL 2022 | There is always tension when MS Dhoni is at bat, admits Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer has admitted there is always tension on the opposition when MS Dhoni are at bat after the wicket-beater keeper scored a half-century in the season opener. Kolkata Knight Riders started their tournament campaign on a high note by beating Chennai Super Kings by six wickets.

The IPL 2022 opener saw a low scoring game between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). KKR proved to be the better side that day and they won the contest by six wickets at Wankhede Stadium. KKR won the toss and elected to play first. The team’s bowlers proved their decision was right when they cut the opposition to 61/5. However, the partnership between MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja helped them put a decent total on the scoreboard of 131/5. Dhoni scored 50 unbeaten runs from 38 balls including a six,

Reflection on the shot played by Dhoni, winning captain Shreyas Iyer admitted that there is always tension when the former CSK captain is at bat.

“There is always tension when MS Dhoni strikes. I knew the moose was going to move towards them with the dew around. It was difficult to grab the ball. Take advantage of the new franchise. The CEO, management and support staff were exceptional. Just gotta keep up the pace. It was more squishy than we imagined,” Shreyas said during the post-match presentation.

The KKR bowlers played very well for the team. Umesh Yadav picked a few wickets for 20 runs, knocking out both CSK openers. Varun Chakravarthy and Andre Russel choose one wicket each. Sunil Nostril couldn’t take a wicket but his saving rate was only 3.80. Shreyas said the bowling unit made it easy for the team to win the match. He also praised Umesh Yadav for his brilliant bowling.

“It’s a place I like to play. I grew up here. I thought it would be flat. It was pretty easy for me with the bowling schedule I had. Umesh worked hard in the nets and also did well in practice matches. Really happy to see him play today,” he added.

Umesh fired Ruturaj first for a duck in the opener on a crushing delivery. His next victim was Devon Conway who tried to play a big shot but played it straight halfway and Shreyas grabbed an easy catch. The right-arm pacer was named Man of the Match for his performance. He revealed he was working on his pace to contribute to his team with the ball.

“Getting this after 2 years (the price) and I’m very happy with the performance. I haven’t played white ball cricket for a while and thanks to the head coach and captain for trusting me and for telling me that I will be in the starting XI,” he explained.

“I actually work on my rhythm because after playing a lot of events the rhythm is such that when you have to start you have to land in the right areas to extract the swing. As a fast bowler and outswing bowler, it always feels good to get a wicket in the first round and that helps build up the pressure. Usually I take my education, training and work ethic very seriously and I feel really good.

It was Ravindra Jadeja’s first match as captain of CSK. He scored 26 unbeaten runs at bat and was instrumental in partnering for the fifth wicket with MS Dhoni. Coming to the bowling alley, he gave up just 25 overs despite the dew factor playing a part. Jadeja revealed that dew will play a vital role in this edition of the IPL and teams will prefer to play first.

“The dew will be the essential part of this edition. If you win the toss, you will be looking to play first. The wicket was a bit wet in the first 6-7 overs, then it went well at the end of the innings. We were trying to deepen the game. Everyone played well considering the dew. well done played very well,” he said.
