After captaining the team for 8 years without winning the trophy, Virat Kohli decided last year to step down as captain of the franchise. This made things exciting for RCB fans as there was constant speculation over who would lead them in this year’s IPL. Prior to the mega-auction, teams had to release players and were only allowed to keep four players. The players the franchise retained were Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell and Mohamed Siraj. They needed to build a strong team like every other franchise at the mega-auction with the added challenge of finding a new skipper.
But, it looked like RCB had their eyes on the guy they wanted as their leader and they went after FAF from Plessis which was released by CSK before the auction. Looking back now, it feels like giving INR 7 crore for a guy like Faf du Plessis was a godsend. RCB managed to build a relatively good team around him.
This can be backed by the type of IPL the team has had this season.
Let’s discover their season:
The Royal Challengers Bangalore were good with the bat to score runs. They managed to score 2454 points in 15 games in IPL 2022. RCB is third best when it comes to points scored this season. The Faf du Plessis-led side are also third best when it comes to fours and sixes this season. During their 2022 IPL campaign, RCB smashed 222 fours and 102 sixes making it a tally of 324 which is second best in the tournament with only Rajasthani Royals in front of them.
But to better understand that, let’s see how they fared on the power play.
Power play C
This is where RCB struggled during IPL 2022 as they were lucky to beat the first nine times during the tournament. A batting lineup that had Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis in their top order couldn’t make the most of the power play when hitting first. RCB scored 363 runs from 324 balls, which is far from the best. Losing wickets early in the innings in almost every game did not allow them to go hammer and claws in this phase of the innings.
Death Overs – A
Since the arrival of Dinesh Karthik in RCB, the team became one of the best in IPL 2022 in kills. RCB broke 455 runs from 247 balls, making him second-best in the money-rich league for batting in the final innings at bat.
Bowling – B
When it comes to bowling as a unit, RCB has managed to do well. The team led by Faf du Plessis managed to take 97 wickets during the season. They were only behind Gujarat Titans and Rajasthan Royals when it came to comparing them against others, which shows the kind of impact they had with the ball in IPL 2022.
RCB fared very poorly when it comes to power play bowling as they only managed to pick 19 wickets out of 16 games making them the second worst performing team in IPL 2022. This is the one of the main reasons why RCB has struggled in many games as the opposition used to take the game away from them in the power play and a huge example of this is the game against Rajasthan Royals in Qualifier 2 where Joe Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal took down their bowlers.
Death on B
RCB’s bowling during this phase of the innings was average at best. The franchise managed to pick 31 wickets in IPL 2022 in deaths which is better than KKR, CSK and PBKS. However, it is not far from the most successful teams that have done well in this department.
Faf du Plessis has been a terrific captain this season for Royal Challengers Bangalore. He had to take over from Virat Kohli who had led this team for 8 years but could not win the IPL. However, with Faf as the leader, it seemed like his personality was starting to rub off on the other players on the team. The South African is calm and doesn’t show much emotion and yet controls the game with ease.
He gave the team players confidence and supported them from the start. During Virat Kohli’s tenure, there were a lot of cuts and changes, but after Faf’s arrival, the players started having a longer rope and weren’t let go. This helped RCB do well in the season and helped them win the eliminator against Lucknow Super Giants. Reaching second qualification in his very first season as captain shows he can do even better with RCB in the years to come.
