IPL 2022 | Rinku Singh’s ability to maintain composure is exceptional, says Shreyas Iyer

Kolkata Knight Riders captain Shreyas Iyer says Rinku Singh’s quality of maintaining composure even after playing a few games is outstanding after winning against Rajasthan Royals by seven wickets. Rinku scored 48 unbeaten runs to help the team win by seven wickets and five walks to spare.

Kolkata Knight Riders revamped their campaign in IPL 2022 by winning against Rajasthani Royals by seven wickets in a low-scoring affair. KKR was going for a 153 in the second set to win the match. They were reduced to 32/2 at one point but Shreyas Iyer and Nitish Rana stabilized the innings. Shreyas was dismissed on 34 points, but Rinku Singh and Rana forged a winning partnership.

Rana went 48 unbeaten from 37 balls, but the biggest innings came from Rinku Singh as he broke 42 unbeaten from 23 balls. The left-handed sleeve was dotted with six limits and an innovative maximum on the thin leg. His shot changed the whole dynamic and the team won the match with seven wickets in hand and five balls to spare. Reflecting on Rinku’s innings, Iyer said he maintained his composure on the pitch and that was commendable.

“The way Rinku maintains his composure, only playing his second or third game, is exceptional. He’s a great asset to the franchise going forward. The way he starts, he doesn’t look like a newcomer,” Shreyas said during the post-match presentation.

Earlier in the match, KKR invited RR to strike first after winning the toss. It was a brilliant collective bowling effort from KKR. They conceded just 38 power-play runs taking just one wicket and played to tight lines and lengths preventing opposing batters from heading the scoreboard. Sanju Samson scored 54 points from 49 balls and the team posted a total of 152/5. Umesh YadavAnukul Roy and Shivam My life choose one wicket each. Tim Southee bagged a few wickets for the team.

Shreyas praised the bowling unit for their performance and congratulated Umesh Yadav as his numbers showed 4-1-24-1 at the end of the game.

“From the power play when our bowlers conceded just 36 runs and took a wicket, that was just the start we needed. We’ve been talking about Umesh from the start. He’s upped his pace and is playing those tough lengths and as captain you just have to give him the ball to deliver. Every time I give Sunil Nostril the ball, he gets me wickets, but the batsmen don’t take risks against him. He is very thrifty, but when he gets a wicket, he gets a big one,” he said.

Rinku Singh’s 48-point shot was a game-changer and he was named ‘Man of the Match’ for his performance. Rinku has seemed in good contact this season and has scored 100 runs in three 50 innings so far.

Rinku revealed that he has been waiting for his opportunity to play in the IPL for five years and is now satisfied with the role he played in the team.

“A lot of players have played Ranji from Aligarh, but I’m the first to play the IPL. It’s a big league and obviously there’s a lot of pressure. I’ve waited for the past five years to get a chance. I worked very hard, came back from injury and did well in the national circuit as well. When I was battling, Bhaiyya (Iyer) and Baz (McCullum) told me to stay until the end and finish it,” Rinku said.
