The Indian Premier League saw one of the biggest leadership changes this year when MS Dhoni handed over the captaincy of CSK to Ravindra Jadeja. However, the move didn’t pay off as Jadeja took over the captaincy at MS Dhoni halfway through, Ravi Shastri feels the all-rounder is not a natural captain.
Ravindra Jadeja was entrusted with the captaincy of Chennai Super Kings two days before their first match of IPL 2022 which was also the season opener. The game was a repeat of last year’s final as KKR took on CSK and beat them overall. What followed was a nightmare for the defending champions as they played the last 5 of the six games they played under their new captain. After captaining the team for 8 games, Jadeja decided to step down as captain and return it to MS Dhoni.
MS Dhoni was back in his old role and in the three games he has coached so far, Dhoni has won two to keep CSK’s playoff hopes alive. However, India’s former head coach Ravi Shastri is of the opinion that Ravindra Jadeja is not a natural captain and giving him the captaincy of CSK was a bit hard for him. “He’s not a natural captain. He hasn’t been a captain at any level. So giving him the responsibility, I thought was a bit difficult for Jadeja,” Shastri told ESPNcricinfo. T20 Time Out.
“People might want to judge Jaddu but that’s not his fault. He wasn’t captain anywhere. He looked like a fish out of water, totally out of place and much better to play as a player.Because he is one of the best in the industry when it comes to allrounders.
“So let him focus on his cricket. It (the decision to give him the captaincy) cost CSK a few games early on. If you see the form they are in now, if they had that at the start, they’ll be up there in the mix.”
The former cricketer was asked who could lead CSK in the future, to which he replied: “Who then could be the options? Just like FAF from Plessis for RCB,” Shastri said, suggesting Super Kings wait until the auction if necessary. “In the mix, if you think Ruturaj has, or Moeen or even a local player, if there’s anyone one that you think has that ability to lead a team, go for it.”
