IPL 2022: Piyush Chawla backs Rishabh Pant to continue as DC skipper

Indian leg spinner Piyush Chawla has backed under-fire Delhi Capitals (DC) captain Rishabh Pant to continue as franchise skipper for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Admitting the keeper-batsman made a few mistakes, he pointed out that the 24-year-old is still relatively new to leadership and still learning the ropes.

Pant was heavily criticized for his leadership in DC’s must-win encounter against the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the franchise’s final league game. He dropped a Dewald Brevis skier at a key moment in the match.

Significantly, he declined to opt for DRS against Tim David after a late appeal was dismissed. Replays showed the Mumbai batter nicked the first ball he faced. On the strength of his luck, David hit 34 from 11 as MI beat DC by five wickets to knock them out of the IPL 2022.

Despite some negative criticism of Pant’s leadership, Chawla felt that DC should stick with him as captain. Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, he said:

“Pant is young and still learning as a captain. Mistakes happen. Not only Rishabh Pant, any captain can make mistakes. He is a man of the future and I’m sure he will learn with time and He is a smart street cricketer, who will only get better if he continues to lead.

Delhi narrowly missed out on qualifying for the IPL 2022 qualifiers. They finished fifth in the points table after the league stage, winning seven and losing an equal number of matches.

“Don’t think the captaincy affects his stick in any way” – Chawla on Pant’s bad numbers with the bat

Some critics believe the added responsibility of leading the team has affected Pant’s batting. However, Chawla disagrees with the observation. According to him, captain or not, the southpaw will only beat one way. He precised :

β€œI don’t think the role of captain impacts his stick in any way. If the ball is there to be hit, even if it is the first ball he faces, he will go after. I don’t think the captaincy had anything to do with his batting performance in this IPL. I wouldn’t even say his form was bad. He was batting well and playing those awesome cameos, but couldn’t convert them into big shots. I would like to see him lead Delhi again next year.

The aggressive keeper-beater scored 340 points in 14 IPL 2022 games with an average of 30.91 and a strike rate of 151.79. He failed to score a half-century and ended the season with a high score of 44.
