Riyan Parag couldn’t provide the finishing kick Rajasthan Royals (RR) needed as they fell 37 points short against Gujarat Titans (GT) on Thursday. Chasing a mammoth target of 193, the Royals could only manage 155/9, handing a comprehensive win to the Titans.
Jos Buttler gave RR the perfect start by firing on all cylinders on the power play. However, the Royals lost unnecessary wickets at crucial moments and it proved fatal to their chances of chasing the total.
Fans on Twitter are running out of patience with youngster Riyan Parag as he has yet to deliver when his team needed him most. Some fans have criticized the Royals franchise for supporting the 20-year-old despite his ineffectiveness over the past three seasons. Here are some of the reactions:
Riyan Parag couldn’t take RR on the line
Chasing 193 was never going to be easy against a powerful bowling GT attack. However, the in-form Buttler flew off the blocks and battled opposing bowlers from the start. The England superstar netted 54 from just 24 balls and gave the Royals a much-needed head start.
It took a special delivery from Lockie Ferguson to fire Buttler and from there the Titans seemed to tighten their grip on the game. Sanju Samson ran away while Rassie van der Dussen had another disappointing outing.
Shimron Hetmyer looked in stunning form and took on Titans spearhead Mohammed Shami. However, he hit one shot too many and was eventually fired. When Riyan Parag came out at bat, RR was still in pursuit with 103 runs needed on 57 balls.
The Royals also had some depth in their hitter with James Neesham to come next. However, Parag couldn’t do much against the juicy throw Ferguson presented to him as he was caught by Shubman Gill from deep.
In the end, there was too much left for Neesham to do and his wicket turned out to be the final nail in RR’s coffin. GT will be concerned about Hardik Pandya’s injury. But if he’s fit, the Titans will certainly look like one of the top contenders to make the playoffs this season.
