IPL 2022 | MI have no bowler to support Jasprit Bumrah, claims Irfan Pathan

Irfan Pathan felt that Mumbai Indians don’t have a pace setter to back up Jasprit Bumrah in the current Indian Premier League season. The five-time champions, largely due to lackluster bowling, lost all of their first three matches, which forced them into ninth place in the points table.

Mumbai Indians, traditionally slow starters in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has had a torrid start to the current cash-rich league season. They have lost all three matches in the tournament so far and sit ninth in the points table, just above Sunrisers Hyderabad. While their batters have sometimes put on impressive shows, their bowlers, led by Jasprit Bumrahdidn’t seem as deadly as before.

MI bowlers have conceded 193 in their twenty overs allowed in their only IPL match this season where they have played first. In the other two, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) chased 162 in 16 overs, and Delhi Capitals hit the target of 178 in 18.2 overs.

Former versatile Indian player Irfan Pathan shared his thoughts on MI’s performance in the ongoing IPL 2022. Pathan said he was hopeful about the Rohit Sharma-the run team makes a comeback, but they don’t have a fast pitcher to support Bumrah.

“Indians in Mumbai know how to recover from situations like these. They’ve done it in the past, in 2014 and 2015. In IPL 2015 they were in a similar situation and came from behind to win the title, but this team was a bit different. This year MI does not have a bowler who can handle (Jasprit) Bumrah well. It’s a big headache for the captain,” Pathan said on Star Sports’ Cricket Live.

Additionally, Pathan said he was impressed with MI’s hitting performance so far in the season. He also mentioned Tilak Varma, which was a serious find this season.

“MI’s stick still looks good as they have young Tilak Varma doing well, Suryakumar Yadav played in his comeback game, and Ichan Kishan shot at the top,” he added.

“You hope that Rohit Sharma and Kieron Pollard will also score points as the tournament progresses, but their bowling department looks weak, especially the pace offense. Traditionally the grounds of Maharashtra are suitable for fast bowlers and if the setters are doing their job well then Murugan Ashvin will also come back with better numbers.

MI will be looking to secure their first win at IPL 2022 when they face Bangalore Royal Challengers (RCB) on Saturday April 9 at the MCA Stadium in Pune.
