Star India striker KL Rahul has admitted leaving the Punjab Kings was a tough decision but he wanted to explore something new when he opted out of being retained by them ahead of the Premier League auction Indian (IPL) 2022. Rahul was drafted by new franchise Lucknow Super Giants for INR 17 crore.
India’s talismanic drummer KL Rahul admitted on Monday to leaving Punjab Kings, who he had managed for the past two seasons in the Indian Premier League (IPL) was a tough decision. However, Rahul said he wanted to explore something new when he chose not to be held by them before the IPL 2022 auction.
Rahul joined the Punjab Kings in 2018 and had consistently scored for them, scoring over 550 points in each of the past four seasons. Ahead of the 2022 auction, he was drafted by new franchise Lucknow Super Giants, owned by RP Sanjiv Goenka Group, for INR 17 crore, and was later named captain for IPL 2022.
Speaking to Red Bull, Rahul said he had a great run with the Punjab Kings.
“I’ve been with them for four years and had a great time with them. I just wanted to see what was in store for me and if there was a new journey for me. It was obviously a tough call. I I have been attached to Punjab for a long time. I wanted to see if there was something else I could do.
Rahul was enlisted with Marcus Stoinis and Ravi Bishnoi by the Lucknow Super Giants ahead of the IPL 2022 auction. They will make their IPL debut when they face another new franchise Gujarat Titans on March 28 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
At the 2022 auction, the head coach of the Punjab Kings Anil Kumble had conceded that PBKS was interested in retaining Rahul but they respected his decision to leave the franchise after last season.
“We wanted to retain him, that’s one of the reasons we chose him as captain two years ago. But he decided to go to the auction. We respect that, we honor his decision. It’s the player’s prerogative,” Kumble explained.
Meanwhile, Punjab Kings have appointed Mayank Agarwalone of their two retentions, as captain for IPL 2022.
