IPL 2022: KKR keeper-beater Sheldon Jackson on his MS Dhoni inspiration

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) wicketkeeper and hitter Sheldon Jackson has called Indian legend MS Dhoni an inspiration. He revealed that he was so influenced by the former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain that he tried to emulate everything MSD was doing.

Jackson and Dhoni were on opposite sides on matchday one of the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) in Mumbai on Saturday. While the former kept wickets for KKR, Dhoni did his usual duty behind the stumps for CSK.

Speaking after Kolkata’s impressive six-wicket win at Wankhede Stadium in the IPL 2022 opener, Jackson said of Dhoni’s impact on his cricket:

“He’s always been my inspiration. I’ve always looked up to him and whatever he does, I just try to emulate him and I have a lot to watch and a lot to learn from him.”

On whether he learned to play Dhoni’s legendary helicopter kick, the 35-year-old replied:

“I learned a lot and learned a lot from him (MSD) actually.”

The keeper-batsman, who represents Saurashtra in domestic cricket, admitted he was nervous since playing his first IPL match since 2017. However, he added:

“At the beginning I had nerves, but the management and the coaching staff are brilliant. They helped calm me down, they supported me and I’m very grateful to them.

Jackson went undefeated on 3 as KKR picked up the win in the opener of IPL 2022.

“It’s a place where I like to play” – KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer

It was a dream start for Shreyas Iyer as KKR captain as he did most things right in the team’s win. He inserted the opposition after winning the toss, Kolkata bowlers limited CSK to 131 for 5. Iyer himself contributed an unbeaten 20 as Kolkata won the match with ease.

Speaking at the post-match presentation, he said:

“I appreciate the new franchise. The CEO, management and support staff were exceptional. Just keep the momentum going.

On the conditions at Wankhede, he added:

“It was more spongy than we imagined. It’s a place I like to play. I grew up here. I thought it would be flat. It was pretty easy for me with the bowling lineup that I had.”

Kolkata pacemaker Umesh Yadav was named Player of the Match for his numbers of 2 out of 20.
