IPL 2022 | ‘Kill negativity with kindness,’ Andre Russell on paying back KKR’s faith in him

Versatile star Andre Russell intends to repay the trust placed in him by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) team management ahead of the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) which kicks off on March 26. Russell, who won the IPL MVP award in 2015 and 2019, is looking forward to contributing to the team’s success.

Versatile Kolkata Knight Riders Andre Russell warned his detractors saying he was ready to kill negativity with benevolence less than a week before the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Russell had struggled to make his mark over the past two IPL seasons when he was not in top form. However, he has recovered well this time and will be looking to contribute more like he did for KKR in the past.

In a video shared by KKR on his Twitter account, Russell said, “I’m proud to be back. With this badge on my heart. Over the past few seasons, you know, there’s been a lot of talk. We talked a lot about me. But, what I will do to silence them is perform. You know, kill negativity with kindness. And do what I do best in the middle. With the bat and with the ball, make brilliant catches.”

Russell, the two-time IPL Most Valuable Player (MVP) award winner, was picked up by KKR for INR 12 crore. This will be his eighth season with the franchise, with whom he won the title in 2014. Since then, he has established himself as one of the T20 format’s greatest finishers. He’s known for hitting big sixes and turning the game around in the space of a few balls, as well as a handy bowling option.

“You know, my mindset is in the right place now. KKR trusted me. My ambition is to make sure I do whatever it takes, whatever it takes to get KKR over the line. It’s about having fun and enjoying every moment once I step onto the pitch during the big games. During the big games, you can also show up and dominate in those games,” added Russell.

Speaking about his approach to IPL 2022, Russell said: “I want to break free, do what I want to do and make sure I’m happy. And if I fail I go back to the drawing board, I’ll put in the job, assessing where I went wrong in the last game, figuring out what I can do better and executing it in the next game. It’s simple.”

Last season’s runners-up KKR will have a new captain in Shreyas Iyer in IPL 2022, and they will open their campaign against the defending champions Chennai Super Kings during the tournament opener on March 26 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
