IPL 2022 | If Dinesh Karthik has one-season cracker jack, he will surely be in contention for national team selection, says Ravi Shastri

Ravi Shastri says Dinesh Karthik can return to the national team if he continues his performance at IPL 2022 as they will be looking for a finisher. However, Shastri also added that his claim might be uncertain due to the number of wicket-keepers present in the Indian squad.

the Indian Premier League will have an effect on the players’ chances of making India’s squad for the 2022 World Cup. Some youngsters are proving their worth in the tournament while some of the veteran players are also making the case for inclusion in the national team. Dinesh Karthik is one such name who has impressed many with his finishing skills in the tournament so far.

Karthik scored 90 points on just 44 balls at a 204.5 strike rate and was crucial for Bangalore Royal Challengers at the end of the rounds. His scores in three games were 32 of 14, 14 of 7 and 44 of 23. His hit against Rajasthani Royals helped the team escape a top-notch collapse and secure a four-wicket victory.

After his impressive performances so far in the league, there is talk of his return to the national team. Former Indian cricketer Ravi Shastri opines that it is possible to include Dinesh Karthik in the Indian squad looking for a finisher but they also need to be aware of the number of wicket-keepers in the squad.

“With the amount of cricket being played and the injuries that can happen, if you have a good IPL season I think he’s right to think that way. He started really hot and if he has a cracker jack of a season, he will surely be in that mix,” Shastri told ESPNcricinfo.

“He has the experience, he has all the shots… there are no more Dhoni in the team now, so you are also considering a finisher. But you also have to see how many keepers you want – there are Ichan Kishan, Rishab Panting and now there is Karthik. And if there is a wound there, then it automatically enters.

Pant is a certainty in the squad, but Ishan Kishan is also making the case for his inclusion in the national team. In addition, India recently recalled Sanju Samson for the T20I home series against Sri Lanka.
